Accessing personal information and freedom of information

We understand that there will be times you will need to access your personal information for a variety of reasons. This document outlines who you should go to with your enquiry to ensure you get the quickest response and most efficient service possible.

The British Library stores personal information for a variety of reasons, and further information can be found here:

These guidelines provide background as to why we collect personal information, how it is stored, what we do with it and details of the Government Acts in place which enable access to information.

How do I access information?

If you are registered for any British Library services and wish to access your ‘My Account’ to change your account options, view your registered services or register for additional services, you can do so by visiting:

If you hold a Reader Pass, and wish to access your reader history (the recorded history of the collection items you have been consulting over the last few months) you can do so by accessing My Reading Room Requests when you log onto the catalogue. If you have any questions about this service, please ask a member of staff in the Reading Rooms.

When accessing the catalogue on PC terminals in Reading Rooms, you will have the opportunity to change your password yourself. If you require any guidance on how to do this, please ask a member of staff. Your username is your reader pass number.

When creating a Library WiFi account, you will have the opportunity to create your own username and password. Your password can be updated by you, as and when you choose. For assistance on this, please ask a member of staff.

How do I change any of my personal details?

If you are a user of or visitor to the British Library, and we hold personal information about you, the below provides guidance on how to change or update this information.

If you are registered for any of our services, accessing ‘My Account’ will allow you to update your account options, and can be accessed here:

If you hold a Reader Pass and need to update your personal information, such as your address or telephone number, you will need to come into the Library and go to Reader Registration, who will be able to update your records. Please do remember to bring in proofs where required i.e. proof of new address, name change etc.

Confirmation of amendments to your details will be required in writing.

Please do let us know as soon as possible if your personal details do change, so we can ensure any information we send reaches you as soon as possible.

How do I gain access to information the Library holds about me?

The Data Protection Act 1998 gives you the right to access to information the Library may hold about you. To submit an access request, you should write to or email:

Your request will be dealt with within forty days of the Library receiving the request.

To help us identify the information you would like to see, please include any details that will enable us to find the information as quickly as possible.

In order to be sure that your personal information is only disclosed to you, we may require you to provide us with proof of identity before the information is released.

How do I submit a request for other unpublished information held by the Library?

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI) and Environmental Information Regulations 2004 give the public the right to request access to unpublished information from a public body, subject to certain conditions such as the need to protect individual privacy, to safeguard commercial and operationally sensitive information or other legal restrictions.

How do I obtain information for my studies?

We do sometimes receive FOI requests that are actually requests for research assistance. If you are looking for any guidance in your fields of research, please contact the Reference Teams in the Reading Rooms, who will be able to point you in the right direction. For more information, see the Help for researchers pages of the BL website.

The British Library Corporate Archive contains original documents created by the Library and its constituent organisations.  This includes records relating to the acquisition of collection items, the administrative history of the Library and its predecessors, and the St Pancras site.
