In 1520, at the Field of Cloth of Gold between Ardres and Guines, Henry VIII showed France extravagant diplomacy. By 1539 he was building forts and castles, a massive navy, and mapping England as never before, to counter the threat of invasion from across the Channel. Key documents reveal the story.
